Matthew Panos (Norwood/SA) – Draft Profile

Height: 191cm

Weight: 91kg

Position: FF/CHF

Potential: 6-7.5/10

Strengths

> Good-very good OH mark – good leap, clean, reliable hands, gets front position consistently and good reading of the flight in the air (including under contested pressure)

> Good general smarts as a forward

> Clean-very clean hands at ground level with decent mobility

> Good vision and decision maker

> Very good kick particularly excellent finishing ability for goal from both set shots (particularly) and in general play - capable of good depth – good field kick

> Good quick and efficient DM both by hand (including good vision) and by foot

Weaknesses

> Played as a key target at U18, but would be slightly undersized for such a role at AFL

> Seems to have slightly below average pace off the mark with OK pace over distance at best and doesn’t have great running capacity or work ethic

> Offers little defensively and efforts are generally weak

> Lacks physical intensity – I have not seen him physically impose himself on a contest, which he should be doing considering he is more solidly built than most and on occasions he has pulled out of marking contests

Other

Panos seems to be the player that greatly divides opinions this year – he primarily plays as a leading full forward with OK at best pace, not much running power/capacity and is lacking in physicality. Whilst this can be effective style at the lower levels, it hasn’t been shown to be as such at AFL with much less space/more crowded forward lines and greater physical pressure from opponents. The positive aspect of his game is when he gets the ball he is a good converter and user. Potentially he could be a good 3rd tall option in a forward line with 2 good tall KPF players already in it, but will most likely need to improve his defensive efforts or he could develop a much larger running capacity and develop into a lead up half forward. He should at least provide serviceable back up as an emergency player that performs well at the level below, at best I think he could be a 40 goal per year 3rd marking tall in a strong forward line. His value seems to be anywhere from late 1st round to rookie selection.

  1. Matthew Pavlich is 192cm...I guess 191cm is slightly undersized?

  2. Pavlich may be 191cm, but it is not an issue as many top key defenders are similar heights (e.g. Scarlett 192cm, Bock 193cm, Glass 192cm, Rutten 191cm, Bolton 190cm) and he is also very well rounded in qualities - very strong 1-1, has a massive engine/work-rate and ultra versatile - all are qualities I haven't seen from Panos (not saying he can't develop them).

It is also notable that the size of most key position prospects coming through is on the rise and these will be the type of players Panos will be competing with.
