Marcus Davies (Tasmania) – Draft Profile

Height: 188cm

Weight: 84kg

Position: HBF/Wing

Potential: 6-7.5/10

Style like: Jason Gram

Strengths

> Provides very good run and drive off half back – only decent pace off the mark at best, but seems to have good pace over distance and is a hard runner with an excellent engine – loves to carry the ball in straight lines over distance off HB

> Good attack on the and strength over the ball and whilst his style is primarily an outside runner – he will put his head over the ball and win contested footy when it’s his turn

> Reads the play very effectively across half back in a sweeping role and is a good all-round ball winner with 20dpg at U18 Championships level

> Strong OH mark and doesn’t mind going back with the flight

Weaknesses

> Doesn’t have great awareness when running with the footy and is prone to getting run down by quicker players

> Hands can be very inconsistent at ground level – prone to the fumbles too often

> Offers little defensive pressure

Other

> Very lean and powerful build

> Decent ball user by foot that is capable of very good depth, needs to improve reliability, but I don’t think he is as bad as his reputation suggests

> Reach disadvantage for his height

> Played in 2 U18 Championships series and has senior experience in the TSFL – could potentially play AFL next year with good form at stage league level as he is physically ready

Overall

Davies is a very capable rebounding half back prospect, but needs to work on improving his ball handling, awareness with the ball and developing a more rounded game defensively. He should at least be a serviceable back up/emergency player for his team as I’d expect him to be a very strong performer at VFL/SANFL/WAFL, at best he could be a solid half back rebounding defender. I'd expect him to go in or beyond the 3rd round.
