Jordan Roughead (North Ballarat Rebels/Vic Country) - Draft Profile

Height: 199.7cm
Weight: 91.8kg
Preferred foot: Right
Playing Style: Inside tap ruckman

Potential: 6.5-8/10

Strengths

> Ruckwork – distributes frequently to his midfielders advantage – shows very good ruck smarts and variety in distribution (has dimensions) – uses his body very well in ruck contests. Can be very deceptive.

> Follows up his ruckwork well to clear the ball at stoppages – doesn’t just contests the tap and sit back – distributes well by hand in traffic and is a very good tackler for a ruckman

> Excellent ethic - frequently gives 2nd efforts, applies defensive pressure

> Good OH pack grab – would like to see him get in position to take more

> Vertical leap

> Mobile and clean ball handling below his knees

> Solid build

Weaknesses

> Doesn’t find much of it around the ground – don’t think he runs to the right spots - unlikely to be a high possession winning ruck

> Slight reach disadvantage

Other Comments

> Average footskills and all-round athleticism for a ruck (excluding VJ) – endurance needs work like a lot of rucks

Overall

Roughead projects to being a solid first choice tap ruckman at AFL level. His ruckwork is definitely good enough, but I don’t think he’ll ever have the high possession game to be considered elite like Dean Cox – I think Jolly or Charman are more realistic playing style and calibre of players for him to end up as. Worth a late 2nd round pick at earliest.
