Ben Speight (Norwood/SA) - Draft Profile

Height: 183cm
Weight: 75kg
Style: Outside/Inside/Predator midfielder/HFF
Potential: 6.5-7.5/10

Strengths

> Very good pace and evasiveness – line breaker – loves to take the game on
> Neat footskills – RF, low trajectory, quick through the air passes with sound accuracy, solid penetration (50m+) and often good hurt factor
> Good attack on the footy
> Strong tackler
> Can kick running goals as a midfielder
> Good intercepting ability
> Clean ball handling at pace
> Quick hands and good vision/awareness in traffic
> Very well balanced – rarely loses his feet

Weaknesses

Goes missing for extended periods – doesn’t seem to know where to run? Opportunistic style? Engine? – doesn’t influence games anywhere near as much as he should be doing
> Occasionally puts the blinkers on when he takes off – ran down twice vs WA (but by no other than Rich and Naitanui)
> Vanilla size

Other

> Looks to be in very good condition/physical shape

Overall

Speight has all the attributes to be a very good midfielder/HFF duo at AFL level but the major issue is he can’t put it all together yet. If he ever can I wouldn’t be surprised if he surpasses my expectations, but if he can’t I think he still has the possibility of being a burst/impact player of the bench. I see the latter more likely than the former.
