> Good football smarts - reads the play well around the ground- seems to have a decent running capacity and consistently gets to the drop of the ball – decent ability to get first hands on the footy at stoppages too – gathers plenty of the football around the ground – average 20dpg at U18 Championships level
> Composed and poised all-round DM with the ball
> Decent-good, quite accurate kick over short-medium distance with good weighting – seems to have OK depth
Weaknesses
> Lacks pace off the mark and ball carrying ability
> Doesn’t offer much defensively outside of stoppages

> Decent user by hand that is capable of showing good vision to open up the play from traffic
> His style is hard to nail accurately – I would think he’s an outside midfielder that can play inside/win his own ball (although some have concerns about lack of physicality? I haven’t seen any significant issues) - but is capable of playing both to a decent level

> Said to be an excellent cricketer – WK/bat that received an AIS scholarship, rookie contract with SA and was named in the preliminary squad – would suggest decent scope to improve his athleticism assuming cricket has been affecting his pre-season training for football

Overall
Carey is a good midfield prospect with a fairly well rounded game. I think at worst he will be a solid midfield depth player, whilst at best he could be a top 150-200 AFL player as a midfielder.
