Strengths

> Genuine footy smarts - excellent game sense and ball winning ability anywhere around the ground – very adept at reading the play and finding space with ease and offers some flair – averaged 19.6d and 1.6g per game playing as a genuine utility in the 2009 U18 Championship

> Very versatile – has the ability to play on almost all lines (HB, W, HF, FP) with very good effect (wing is probably his best suited position IMO)

> Good engine

> Good user by foot – technically very proficient and economical - right footed but capable of using his left – good accuracy and weighting and very good penetration (55m+) and distance on a consistent basis

> Good-very good decision maker with time/space

> Excellent overhead mark (plays taller than listed height) – one grabber that is capable of a big pack marks – reads the flight and positions himself very well

> Good goal kicking rate and efficiency – accurate and capable of multiple goals from wing or half forward – averaged 1.6gpg at U18 Championships level and 1.3gpg at WAFL League level

> Reports suggest he demonstrates good leadership qualities

Weaknesses

> His intensity and efforts defensively have a tendency to be somewhat inconsistent and lackadaisical (particularly tackling and chasing, which he has acknowledged he needs to brush up on)

> Has a tendency to lose concentration and give away clumsy/undisciplined free kicks too often

Other

> OK-maybe slightly below average pace off the mark (OK over distance) capable of carrying the ball with decent effect from the midfield or defence
> Sound ball handling and feeding ability without being great
> DM under pressure is OK-sound – doesn’t consistently venture into or display standout ability in traffic (seems to have reasonable ability, but plays an outside game), hence I don’t see inside midfield as a potential position for him at this stage

> OK build at present (somewhat thin), but I expect him to fill out into a good build for his roles as a medium utility

> Should be AFL ready for 2010 – has sufficient WAFL experience and has looked comfortable playing against men – averaged 13d and 1.3g from 7 league games (including one stinker vs WP where he only had 2d for the game)

> Played in 2 U18 championships series (2008 and 2009) – 2008 averaged 10 disposals over 3 games, playing off HB, 2009 averaged 19.6d and 1.6g per game playing as a utility (HB/W/F)

> 2007 WA U16 captain

> 2009 WA U18 vice captain

> AIS-AFL squad member

Overall

Duncan is a polished ‘all-round’ footballer that is capable of being a quality ‘genuine’ medium utility option for his team (i.e. not just someone that will not look serviceable on any line, but someone who is comfortable and can have an impact on each line), but needs to become more team orientated in his style. He should at least develop into a serviceable utility option that at best could be a top 100 AFL player. He is worth a late first round to mid second round pick IMO.
