Matthew Broadbent (Woodville West Torrens/SA) - Draft Profile

Height: 189.3cm
Weight: 83.2kg
Style: Inside/Outside running HBF/utility
Potential: 7-8/10

Strengths

> Bullocking attack on the footy - hits the ball very hard (makes him look quicker than he is?) and has great desperation – charges forward with the footy
> Capable winning the footy inside or outside
> Thumping, long RF kick –sometimes very good hurt factor – effective in a dam buster way
> Efficient and effective user by hand – regularly feeds to team mates advantage and rarely coughs it up
> Takes the game on with his hard running and likes to send the ball long by foot – 75m player
> Very clean hands at ground level
> Good engine – 3km time in top 10 at DC and above average beep test (mid-high 13s)
> Production and consistency – has consistently produced the goods this year with performances at both U18 level and SANFL – very reliable player who is unlikely to waver much in output
> Good reader of the play – well adept at chopping off opposition attacks
> Reads stoppages well – often gets first hands to it after the ruck has been contested
> Generally shows good accountability to his direct opponent – has been assigned tagging roles.

Weaknesses

> Lacks agility/wide turning circle
> Straight line player – lacks peripheral vision when kicking and is predictable when kicking
> Quite a few of his kicks tend to hang in the air a bit too much

Other

> Reasonable pace but I think his testing times flatter him a bit
> Average–decent reliability with his kicking
> Solid aerially without standing out

Overall

Broadbent is a sound prospect who I think is a good chance to make it as an AFL player due to his wide range of attributes – particularly his attack on the footy and will power to win the footy. I don’t think has star potential, due to a few of his limitations, but at worst you will have someone that will be a serviceable player inside the best XXII. I think a late 2nd rounder to early third rounder is fair value.
